Curriculum and Teacher Training
You’ve heard the saying, “A classroom is only as good as it’s teacher.” Well, we believe the same is true of our IDIYA Labs. However, we also understand that many schools battle a high teacher turnover, which means you may not always have a teacher on staff who is passionate about our IDIYA Labs or knows how to lead this type of classroom.
We want to make sure you gain the most out of your investment in IDIYA Labs for years to come, which is why we have created a turn-key curriculum for each lab, specific to grades and STEM/STEAM requirements. Our curriculum is updated with fresh, new ideas each school year and can easily be plugged into the classroom by any teacher (or substitute teacher) in charge of the innovation lab.
Let’s Get Started
“Design Thinking”
“Design Thinking” is the best way to describe the IDIYA Labs education philosophy. Design thinking is a formal method for practical, creative resolution of problems that works towards improved results. In this regard, design thinking is a form of solution-focused thinking in which students start with a goal instead of solving specific problems. As an example, design thinking would encourage students to discuss the science behind gravity and then challenge students to design something to protect an egg from cracking after it is dropped from a certain height. Design thinking helps students learn the fundamentals of engineering and understand the science supporting each solution.
Modular Curriculum
IDIYA Labs provides an online curriculum for students to learn about tools and equipment through project-based assignments. The online curriculum makes it easy for teachers to manage multiple projects at the same time. The flexible learning platform allows students in the same class to explore multiple concepts with ease empowering them to explore the content that is most interesting to them. Each lesson has a pre-test, introduction, reading portion, reading questions, support videos, post-test and additional resources. The virtual platform allows students to create probes to track what they have learned, when basic skills are mastered, and when to move on to more advanced projects.
Project grading rubrics are integrated into each lesson and are fully customizable. Schools with online curriculum access will receive newly developed lessons as they become available.
Innovation and Prototyping
Entrepreneurial innovation significantly impacts every sector of our global economy. Proper education and use of state-of-the-art equipment accelerates the path to innovation. Students can rapidly create a working prototype and become masters of their own creativity, reinventing the way they interact with the world around them. In doing so, schools play a larger role in creating leaders and innovators for the future.
Constructionist Philosophy Inspires Deeper Learning
Constructionist is the philosophy of hands-on learning through building and making. This philosophy views learning as a highly personal endeavor requiring the student, rather than the teacher, to initiate the learning process. Teachers act as a guide for inquiry-based approaches to knowledge development and procedural thinking. Consider a student trying to design a specific gear ratio, but has encountered a roadblock in their design process. As the student struggles with their design, another student sees the problem and offers a solution. By collaborating to overcome the challenge, each student is actively engaged in learning and teaching new concepts to each other.
The teacher in this situation would be an outside observer, only intervening when they feel it necessary to add rigor to the current problem. The primary objective of the teacher in this case is to facilitate the understanding of meaningful concepts by working to execute projects from conception to completion.
IDIYA Labs Educator Training
IDIYA Labs Educator Training breaks down barriers for teachers in all levels of familiarity with the technologies found in an innovation lab. Our highly skilled instructors provide hands-on, intensive training to the faculty of your school’s dedicated innovation lab. Faculty will learn how to operate machinery, program using design software, and hands-on best practices for integrating innovation lab curriculum throughout the school. Teachers attend IDIYA Labs instructor training and learn how to properly operate and maintain equipment using industry standard and advanced level training.
Furthermore, IDIYA Labs instructors will learn design thinking philosophies and project-based learning assignments ideas suited for all grade levels. After training is complete, instructors share knowledge with other teachers on campus on how to incorporate maker projects into their classwork.
